Lviv: Weird and Wonderful
In Lviv, a lovely compact city in Western Ukraine, there’s a shrine with a varied collection of dolls, plush animals, figurines and musical instruments either left behind or forgotten. It was started by a resident of one of the blocks around who found two lost toys and placed them side by side in a courtyard in case the owners came looking for them. The owners never came back but more dolls started showing up and now, this little courtyard is a very popular place to visit in the city.
I found this place on my way up to Lviv High Castle and spent longer than expected, looking at the dolls and trying to imagine the kind of people who owned them. While a little creepy, it did remind me of the garden with doll heads I visited in Cuba.
Lviv is a city with lots of weird and wonderful attractions, especially bars and restaurants. I went to a restaurant where the door is unmarked and you get greeted by a local man who insists you are in the wrong place and it’s his house. He later invites you into what looks like a cramped kitchen of an apartment, offers you tea and eventually leads you through another door into the big restaurant called The Most Expensive Galician Restaurant. There’s a bar where you can fire a pellet gun at Putin or wipe your ass with a loo roll that has his face, and another one dedicated to masochism.
Oh and there’s House of legend, a bar/restaurant manned by little people which has a car on the roof.
Lviv is also known for having good coffee and so I spent all mornings and evenings trying out the coffee houses recommended by locals and also ones I stumbled upon. One of such coffee houses, The Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture, is where I picked up this pack of coffee beans with a rather interesting label.
It is also a city with sunsets to die for.
Have you ever visited any creepy or bizarre attractions? Which left an impression?
